The Viennese Woods are a popular recreational area of the Viennese that has been recognized as a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO since 2005.
In the Viennese Woods are among other things Heiligenkreuz Abbey, the second oldest Cistercian monastery of the world, 
the village of Mayerling which gained notoriety through the suicide of Crown Prince Rudolf, as well as the Seegrotte Hinterbrühlwith the largest underground lake of Europe.
